10 Ways to Connect With the Word
When a person enters into a relationship with Jesus Christ,
that relationship grows through prayer and time in God’s Word. Here are 10 ways
to connect with the Bible:
Read it. Reading through the Bible is good. But if you
always read it straight through, it’s too easy to get bogged down in a book
like Leviticus. Vary your method. One of the best ways to read the Bible is to
selectively read entire books at a sitting. This is surprisingly doable, and
you will find you gain wonderful insights not found in piecemeal readings.
Study it. Mine the truths of God’s Word. When you have a
question, don’t make your first act to ask someone else. Try to get your answer
from the Bible first. And always ask God to open your spiritual eyes (Psalm
119:18).
Memorize it. This step, done regularly, will revolutionize
your spiritual walk (Psalm 119:11).
Meditate on it. Prayerfully think about brief passages of
Scripture (Joshua 1:8).
Pray it. Some of the psalms are ideal for this.
Bring it. Fewer Bibles are brought to church today. Many
rely on words projected on a screen. I remember “Sword drills,” contests for
kids to see who could find passages in the Bible the quickest. These were
valuable in familiarizing students with the Word.
Mark it. Underline verses that speak to you. “The word of
God is living and active …” (Hebrews 4:12, NIV).
Sample it. By this, I do not mean flopping your Bible open
and plunking your finger down at random hoping for direction. I mean regularly
leafing through the pages of Scripture to find verses you’ve marked and notes
you’ve made. It will continue to guide you (Psalm 119:105).
Share it. Don’t keep the Word to yourself.
Discuss it. Make discussing the Bible a regular part of
Christian fellowship.
“For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but
of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God” (1 Peter 1:23).
